Some long hair dogs tend to grow hair deep in the ear canal. This hair can trap moisture and provide the perfect environment for yeast and bacteria to cause an infection. The groomer will pluck any hair that needs removing and thoroughly clean the ears. If redness is noted in the ears, this will be relayed to you so that you can schedule an appropriate veterinary care appointment with the veterinarian if that is what you choose. Long hair breeds also tend to grow excessive amounts of hair between their paw pads as well as around the perianal area (back end). This can lead to matting of hair, accumulation of dirt in the hair, and can cause problems with urination and defecation. Our groomer will trim around these areas to help prevent problems before they start. Shave downs are also a service that we provide for both cats and dogs. Call us for pricing information.
Some breeds such as Yorkies, Shih Tzus, and Malteses grow long hair around the eyes and mouth. The hair around the mouth can become matted with food and saliva and become odorous. Long hairs around the eye may rub on the cornea causing irritation, tearing, and possibly ulcers. Chronic irritation to the cornea can lead to pigmentation and eventually blindness. It's important to keep this in mind have this area clean and trimmed back if problems arise.
Your pet's nails will be trimmed at each visit. Most dogs and cats don't naturally wear their nails down as quickly as they grow. Long nails can cause joint pain and stiffness. Pets are designed to walk on their pads; not their nails. Therefore, if your pet's nails are touching the ground, they are too long.
Anal gland expression is also included in all grooms. These glands are two small sacks just inside your pet's anus. They are filled with a foul smelling liquid that is usually excreted onto the feces for territorial purposes. Routine emptying of these sacs can help prevent rupture of the glands and can help prevent unwanted smells or staining of the carpet.
